The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka is the successor to the ‘Engineering Association of Ceylon’, which was founded in 1906. In 1968, the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka was made an incorporated body of the government, by an Act of Parliament. The IESL being the Apex body for engineering professionals in Sri Lanka, having a membership of more than 15,000, is called upon to represent the profession at many national forums and contribute to national development. By virtue of agreements it has entered into with the International Engineers’ Alliance (IEA) for mutual recognition of competencies, members assessed to have such competencies by IESL can practice engineering in the member countries including Australia, United Kingdom, Japan, Singapore, India, Pakistan and South Korea.
IESL in its vision aims to be among the leading professional institutions of engineering and technology in the world. Standing in line with the vision statement, Techno Sri Lanka’s mission is to “Bringing Out and Unleashing the Country’s Multi – Disciplinary Engineering Talents, to Drive Sri Lanka into Technological Excellence for Revolutionary Uplifting of Peoples’ Living Conditions and Prosperity”. Engineers are driven by passion to look beyond the regular, push borders and create the impossible. This is also reflective of the fact that engineers over centuries are really innovators, who think beyond the realm and invent solutions for mankind, ahead of their time. That’s what engineering is all about and it’s the reason engineers will always be the ingenious inventors and imaginative innovators throughout time.
The flagship event of IESL, Techno Sri Lanka, since its inception in 1985 has grown to be the largest and the only engineering and technology exhibition held annually in Colombo Sri Lanka. As the largest one-stop-shop exhibition related to engineering and technology, Techno Sri Lanka completed its 31st edition with nearly 25,000 visitors last year. Techno, living up to its standards, has provided the means for uplifting peoples’ living conditions and has become an ideal venue for industry professionals, business heads, technologists and keen public to come together on a single global platform.
The world is changing; engineers are in the forefront of this change. Expectations are very high in today’s society. However, the Planet’s resources are fast depleting and engineers have to be smart and innovative to achieve high goals with very low resource consumption. Technology should reach the masses and make them do things differently, as doing ‘business as usual’ will not leave a healthy planet for our children and grandchildren. We need ‘disruptive technologies’ that will revolutionize the day-to-day activities, such as mobile technology, nanotechnology, household solar PV technology and perhaps other inventions and breakthroughs to satisfy the society’s expectations and still not be blamed by our future generations for not leaving them a livable Planet Earth.
Considering these facts, Techno Sri Lanka has redefined its Theme and Tagline for the year 2017, aiming to fulfill the expectations of all stakeholders.
